A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
